What is Hope? by Karen Oliveto

What is "hope"?

The dictionary defines hope as:

  1. to cherish a desire with anticipation
  2. to want something to happen or be true
  3.     a feeling of trust
Over the past ten years, the founders of Tarajia Together Kenya have found that hope is best when shared with others.
From our first visit with the teachers and students at Little Ray of Hope Learning Center

, we learned how hope is sustained even in the harshest of conditions. When adults provide shelter, meals, and education for children who are living in poverty--many orphaned and living with HIV--hope is a germinated seed hungry for water, for sunlight, for the promise that the seed will burst and new life will sprout.

Tarajia Together Kenya seeks to ensure that the children of Kawangware have hope:

  • that they can receive an education
  • that they can dream about what they want to be when they grow up and have the tools and resources to achieve their dream
  • that there will always be a village of adults--both in Kawangware and around the world--who will help them live their dream
  • that tomorrow truly will be a better day

In my visits with the Ray of Hope Learning Center in Kawangware, I fell in love with the children. Their joy is contagious! Their energy is limitless! Their care of each other is inspiring! And I fell in love with the teachers, who create a family for many of the children who have none. These teachers--with virtually no resources--live out of a sense of abundance: as long as we care for each other, there will be enough.

The Ray of Hope Learning Center teachers and students have taught me so much about hope.
